Refugees will often need support to put their skills and abilities to use in the UK.
APEL involves looking at learning that comes from experience, including paid or voluntary work experience, hobbies, life experience or training. It suggests ways of recognising this formally. This is often done by building a portfolio of evidence of experience and learning that can be presented to potential employers.
Organisations that provide APEL services for refugees include the Overseas Qualification Development Programme, and RAGU.
Refugees who have been health professionals in their countries of origin may need support in having their qualifications recognised and in adapting to the requirements of UK health professions. More guidance is provided in building on refugees’ skills and experiences.
